Welcome to the My CitiKitty Training Site
Frequently we receive questions from CitiKitty customers during and after toilet training their cat. The below questions have been asked by customers like you and the answers have been provided by our toilet training experts.
Q. I have trained my cat on one toilet in my home but now want them to use the other toilets in my home too. How do I do this?
A. When you complete the training you will be left with the CitiKitty Training Seat with remaining ledge. Place this training seat with a small amount of litter on the other toilets in your home you want your cat to use. Bring your cat to the toilet and show them the 'new' location they can go. Leave the training seat on the toilet with a small amount of litter until they catch on, then remove it.
Q. I will be traveling soon and would like to take my toilet trained cat with me. will they use the toilet in the new place without training?
A. Some cats are able to recognize any toilet as a place to go the bathroom. Other cats need a 'refresher course' for new toilets. You can do this by either retraining your cat entirely in the new place or you can use the the CitiKitty Training Seat with remaining ledge on the new toilet like described above. Please note: Some cats are very good at adapting to new toilets, some cats are not. Take your cats ability to adapt to a toilet into consideration when deciding to travel with them.
Q. I will be traveling soon. What do I do about keeping the toilet clean?
A. There are 2 simple ways to address this issue. The first is you can ask your cats caretaker to flush the toilet during visits to your home while you are gone. This task will be much easier then cleaning your cats litter box like they formally did. Alternatively you can install an automatic toilet flusher on your toilet. We recommend >> Technical Concepts. We encourage you to use the '24 Hour Flush' feature provided with the unit. This way your toilet will flush once every 24 hours while you are gone. Note: when installing a automatic toilet flusher you do not want it to flush while your cat is up on the toilet as this may scare them. We encourage you only to use the 24 hour flush feature. Also, we do not recommend transitioning your cat back to a litter box during vacation unless necessary.
Q. I am bringing home a new cat that is 3 months old and litter box trained. Should I begin training them right away?
A. It's important to give your cat time to get comfortable in their new home before beginning any type of training. We recommend taking the following steps when training a new cat.
- Instead of having your cat use a litter box when you bring them home would we recommend using the CitiKitty on the floor beside the toilet.
- After at least one week raise the height of the training seat 12 inches by placing a box or some books underneath. Make sure this arrangement is secure for your cat
- After one more week place the CitiKitty Training Seat on the toilet and then progress with the training as normal
Q. My cat is already toilet trained. I plan on getting a new cat soon. How do I get my new cat to use the toilet too?
A. When you bring your new cat home we recommend beginning toilet training right away (as long as they are at least 3 months old & healthy). During training you can either allow your already toilet trained cat to go through the training again or you can keep your cat from the bathroom the training is being done in.
Q. I would like to begin training my new kittens as soon as I bring them home but you recommend waiting until they are at least 3 months old. Is their any training I can do when I first bring them home?
A. We do recommend waiting until cats are at least 3 months old to begin toilet training. This is because you want to make sure they have established healthy bathroom habits and are steady on their feet. However you can add the following steps to the beginning of their training process so they can begin the training as soon as they arrive home.
-
When your bring your cats home use the CitiKitty Training Seat on the floor beside the toilet as their litter box. Over the next 2 months raise the height of the training seat every week a few inches (place books or boxes underneath the training seat). This will get them used to hopping up to go the bathroom.
-
On the third month place the CitiKitty Training Seat on the toilet. After your cat(s) is 3 months old and steady on their feet you can begin removing the rings from the training seat.
Q. My cat has not adapted to using the training seat on the toilet with no rings removed and has had a few accidents. Is their anyway to help them adapt to the training?
A. Before you proceed with the training you want to get your cat on track with the training. To do this we would recommend the following:
- Place the CitiKitty Training Seat beside the toilet on the floor. Allow your cat a few days to get comfortable with this set-up before moving on.
- After your cats have grown comfortable using the training seat beside the toilet and had no accidents raise the height of the training seat 12 inches off the ground by placing a box or books underneath. Again, give your cat a few days to adapt.
- Raise the height of the training seat again and wait a few days.
-
Continue raising the height of the training seat every few days until it is the height of the toilet.
- Place the CitiKitty Training Seat on the toilet.
These above steps should help your cat get used to hopping up to go the bathroom. It will also get your cat used to playing 'follow the leader' which will help them with the training in the future.
Q. I am in the middle of toilet training my cat and he/she has begun to have accidents. Is there anything I can do to get them back on track with the training?
A. If your cat has had accidents and you have begun removing rings from the training seat we recommend making the following modifications to the training process:
- First you want to let your cat know their alternative bathroom spot is not a place for their waste. You can do this by taping a piece of aluminum foil onto that area of the floor or placing a heavy object there. If they are having accidents in your tub or sink we recommend leaving a small amount of water there until you complete the training.
- Now would be a great time give your cat a special treat after they use the toilet. Tuna flakes work very well. Also, continue giving your cats praise every time they use the toilet.
-
Start feeding your cat at the same time everyday to regulate their bathroom habits. This way you will know when they are ready to go and you can be there to give your cat praise afterwards and treats.
-
During the remainder of the training we recommend limiting your cats access to just a few rooms in the house. You can do this by closing the doors to the extra rooms in your home.
-
To make the transition even easier for your cat you can remove just 1/4 of a ring. You can continue to move through the training at the same pace as before but by making each individual transition smaller you make adapting to each new step easier for your cats and hence, avoid accidents.
If your cat is back on track with the training with the above recommendations you are all set. If they are still having difficulty we recommend the below:
- Cover a portion of the open hole with a strong piece of adhesive tape (such as duct tape). If this small step backwards works for your cat give your cat one week to adapt to the revised training seat.
- After your cat has used the training seat successfully for 1 week remove a small portion of the taped area. Continue removing a small portion of the taped area (every few days) until all the taped area is removed. You don't want to make changes too quickly because your cat recently had accidents.
- Once you have reached the point where the entire taped area is removed give your cat one week to get comfortable using the training seat again before moving forward.
Q. I have just started toilet training my cat and they have very bad aim. Some waste lands in the training seat but some gets on the toilet seat and on the floor. Is there anyway to help them with their aim?
A. As you continue with the training and begin removing rings from the training seat your cats aim will improve. As the rings are removed from the seat your cat will begin to stand closer to the perimeter of the training seat verses the middle thus giving them more area for their waste and improving aim. You may want to consider removing a 1/4 of a ring from the training seat at a time so you can track if your cats aim improves as you progress with the training.
Q. My cat is at the final stage in the training and there are no rings left on the training seat. My cat seems to be dependant on the seat. Is there anything I can do to make this last transition easier for them?
A. Some cats can grow attached to the training seat. In these cases we recommend taking additional steps in the end of the training. Treat the remaining ledge in the training seat as if it were another ring and remove 1/4 of the ledge every few days. Once there is no ledge on the training seat leave it on the toilet for one more week before removing all together.
Q. My cat does not seem to like the flushable litter I am using. Do you have any recommendations?
A. Some cats have no problems transitioning to a new type of litter. However, if your cat is having difficulty transiting to the new litter we recommend mixing the flushable with non-flushable litter for a few weeks to make this transition easier for your cat.
